Behind the Screen: The Early Years and Childhood of Song Kang

Long before he earned the title of the “Son of Netflix” and captured global hearts in hit series like Sweet Home, Love Alarm, and My Demon, actor Song Kang was just an ordinary kid growing up in Suwon, South Korea.

While fans worldwide know him for his striking visuals, intense on-screen presence, and versatile acting, his childhood paints a picture of a surprisingly down-to-earth upbringing filled with athletics, music, and quiet dreams.

A Household of Athletes and Artists

Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up in a family that deeply valued both physical discipline and creative expression. Athletics ran strong in his bloodline: his father was a former national-level artistic gymnast, and gymnastics lineage also extended to his grandfather. Given his family background, it was naturally assumed that young Song Kang would follow a path into competitive sports.

However, despite his active upbringing, Song Kang realized early on that professional athletics wasn’t quite the right fit for him. Instead, his environment balanced out through his mother, who worked as a piano teacher.

Music played a surprisingly prominent role in his early days. Under his mother’s guidance, Song Kang learned to play the piano and even clinched several awards at local piano competitions during his elementary school years. Though he humorously admitted in later interviews that he practiced somewhat reluctantly back then, those early lessons laid a foundation that would circle back to help him years later when preparing for musically-themed acting roles.

Growing Up with a Close-knit Family

Song Kang grew up alongside a younger brother, born in 1998. By his own accounts, their childhood dynamic was typical of many brothers—filled with everyday bickering, shared spaces, and a loyal bond that matured into a close friendship as they grew older.

Even as he transitioned into school life at Suwon and later moved through Songpa Middle School and Changhyun High School, Song Kang wasn’t instantly set on becoming a celebrity. Like many teenagers, he spent his youth figuring out his interests, enjoying simple hobbies, and exploring what he wanted to do with his future.

The Spark That Changed Everything

The turning point that steered Song Kang away from a conventional path and toward the silver screen happened during his late teens. While watching television, he caught a performance by Hollywood icon Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic.

DiCaprio’s intense emotional range and magnetic screen presence left a profound, lasting impression on the young student. It was in that exact moment that the seed for acting was planted. Inspired by the way an actor could evoke deep emotions and tell powerful stories, Song Kang decided to pursue a career in film and television.

He went on to major in Film Arts at Konkuk University, throwing himself entirely into studying the craft, building his portfolio, and preparing for the competitive entertainment industry—ultimately paving the way for his official acting debut in 2017.

From Quiet Childhood to Global Stardom

Looking back at Song Kang’s formative years, it’s easy to see how elements of his childhood quietly shaped the artist he is today. The athletic discipline from his gymnast father likely contributed to his incredible physical dedication for demanding action roles, while his early piano training reflected a sensitive, artistic side that helps him master nuanced romantic characters.
