Often dubbed the “Son of Netflix” due to his unprecedented string of global streaming hits, Song Kang (born April 23, 1994) has rapidly transformed from a fresh-faced newcomer into one of South Korea’s most recognizable and bankable leading men.
From Suwon Roots to the Silver Screen
Born in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, Song Kang grew up surrounded by an appreciation for discipline and performance—his father was a gymnastics athlete, instilling an early appreciation for physical fitness and form. Before catching the acting bug, he explored various paths, eventually finding his true calling in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University.
Though numerous management labels scouted him to potentially train as a K-pop idol, Song Kang’s heart remained set on cinematic storytelling. He officially stepped into the entertainment industry in 2017, taking on a supporting role in the romantic-comedy series The Liar and His Lover.
The Rise of the “Son of Netflix”
Song’s meteoric ascent truly kicked off when he beat out hundreds of hopefuls to land the role of Hwang Sun-oh in the groundbreaking Netflix adaptation Love Alarm (2019). The series became a massive international phenomenon, introducing his striking visuals and emotive gaze to global audiences.
Capitalizing on this momentum, Song deliberately diversified his portfolio, proving he was far more than a typical romance-drama heartthrob:
- Sweet Home (2020–2024): He showcased his range by headlining this dark, apocalyptic creature-feature as Cha Hyun-soo, a traumatized loner fighting for survival. The high-budget project cemented his status as a global horror-action lead.
- Navillera (2021): In this poignant, deeply moving drama, Song played a troubled ballerino finding healing through an unexpected friendship with an elderly man. To authentically pull off the role, he underwent months of rigorous ballet training.
- Forecasting Love and Weather (2022) & My Demon (2023): He returned to the romance genre with effortless charm, starring alongside top actresses like Park Min-young and Kim Yoo-jung. His performance in My Demon earned him prestigious accolades, including the Top Excellence Award at the SBS Drama Awards.
Milestones and Off-Screen Persona
Off-screen, Song’s personality contrasts sharply with the intense or aloof characters he sometimes portrays. Known to be easygoing, a bit introverted (MBTI type: INTP), and deeply dedicated to his craft, he maintains a close bond with his global fanbase, affectionately known as Songpyeon.
In April 2024, Song enlisted to fulfill his mandatory South Korean military service as an active-duty soldier. Following his discharge, anticipation has remained exceptionally high as audiences look forward to the next chapter of his career.
By balancing blockbuster commercial projects with challenging indie-spirited character studies, Song Kang has proven that his longevity in the industry rests securely on a foundation of genuine versatility, raw talent, and undeniable charisma.
