Beyond the Adversary: Why the AI World is Moving Past GANs (And What’s Replacing Them)
For years, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) ruled the realm of synthetic media. Introduced in 2014, they gave the world jaw-dropping capabilities: hyper-realistic fake faces, seamless style transfers, and a leap in computer vision that felt straight out of science fiction.
Yet, beneath their glossy outputs lay a notoriously rocky engineering reality. GANs are famously hard to train, prone to catastrophic training failures like mode collapse (where the generator gets stuck producing the exact same few outputs), and heavily dependent on a delicate balance between two competing neural networks—the generator and the discriminator.
