Have you ever recorded a track of your own, found a rare live bootleg, or downloaded an unreleased remix, only to wish it lived right alongside your favorite mainstream albums on Spotify?
While you can’t officially “upload” a song directly to Spotify’s global database as an independent artist without using a distribution service like DistroKid or TuneCore, you can use Spotify’s Local Files feature. This lets you inject your own audio files straight into your desktop library, organize them into custom playlists, and even stream them on your phone.
Here is your complete, step-by-step guide to bringing your own music into the Spotify ecosystem.
Step 1: Prepare and Format Your Audio Files
Before touching Spotify, make sure your files are ready to play. Spotify is picky about file types. To avoid greyed-out tracks or invisible folders, ensure your songs are saved as MP3, MP4, or M4P files.
- Note: Formats like FLAC or WAV are fantastic for production, but Spotify’s local player won’t recognize them out of the box. Convert them to MP3 beforehand if you run into trouble.
Organize all the songs you want to add into a single, dedicated folder on your computer (for example, a folder named “My Custom Spotify Tracks” nested inside your main Music directory).
Step 2: Unlock Local Files on Desktop
Because managing files is easiest on a computer, you always want to set up Local Files on your Mac or PC first—even if your ultimate goal is listening on your phone.
- Open the Spotify desktop app and log into your account.
- Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Scroll down until you find the Library section.
- Toggle the switch on for Show Local Files.
- Once turned on, a new section called Show songs from will appear, along with default paths like your Downloads or Music Library. Click Add a source to select the specific folder you created in Step 1.
Your tracks are now officially imported into Spotify! To find them, head to your Your Library tab on the left sidebar and click on the Local Files folder.
Step 3: Build a Playlist
You can’t stream raw local files directly from the master Local Files tab onto mobile devices very easily, so your next move is bridging them into a playlist:
- Create a New Playlist in Spotify and name it whatever you like (
